Chemical contaminants in drinking water and their impacts with a focus on point-of-use (household) applications
This presentation will focus on chemical contaminants in drinking water with a particular focus on issues related to point-of-use (household) applications). It will give an overview of main chemical contaminants and their impact on public health as well as other cross cutting issues. Acknowledging that risks associated with such contaminants depend on their quantification, an outline of available techniques (including “field-friendly” ones) will be presented for selected parameters. Finally, strategies to reduce risks (avoidance or treatment) will be presented. A discussion period will follow.

Speaker Bio:
Caetano Dorea is a Professor at the University of Victoria where he leads the Public Health & Environmental Engineering (PH2E) Lab. His interests and expertise are at the crossroads of environmental and public health engineering. This includes the development and evaluation of water and sanitation/wastewater technologies, field- and operator-appropriate water/wastewater/ faecal sludge quality analytical methods, and functional ecology characterization of biological treatment systems for safeguarding the health of the public and the environment. My activities are focused both on low- and middle-income countries and in industrialized countries with projects ranging from the development of methods for the online monitoring and control of disinfection by products in Canadian municipalities to the delivery of safe water and sanitation for humanitarian relief.
